Why is this medication prescribed
Clarithromycin is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and infections of the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, and throat. It also is used to prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is used in combination with other medications to eliminate
H. pyloriOther uses for this medicine
Clarithromycin also is used sometimes to treat Lyme disease and toxoplasmosis. It is also used sometimes to prevent heart infection in patients having dental or other procedures. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medication for your condition.
This medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
What other information should I know
Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor may order certain lab tests to check your body's response to clarithromycin.
Do not let anyone else take your medication. Your prescription is probably not refillable. If you still have symptoms of infection after you finish the clarithromycin, call your doctor.
In case of emergency overdose
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
